Some commercial buildings either do not have a slab on the lowest level or only a partial slab present. In this case, a vapor barrier will need to be installed and sealed air tight to the foundation. The vapor barrier will trap rising soil gasses even more effectively than a concrete slab. After the vapor barrier is installed, collection points are dug under the barrier and the mitigation system piping is sealed down to the barrier above those points. The rest of a sub-membrane depressurization is essentially the same as a common SSD system. In new construction properties, the utilization of a vapor barrier and a concrete slab can greatly reduce both radon and vapor intrusion indoors. Lifetime Environmental Solutions will assist in the implementation of sub-membrane depressurization systems in both new construction projects and existing structures.

Commercial Sub-Slab Depressurization Systems
Sub-Slab Depressurization Systems
Commercial buildings like offices, schools, hospitals, and factories are vulnerable to harmful soil gases entering through the slab. The most common issue is radon gas, a colorless, odorless byproduct of uranium breakdown that causes lung cancer and kills over 21,000 Americans annually, according to the EPA. Long-term exposure is easy to accumulate, given the time we spend at work. Early detection through professional radon testing can save lives.
Vapor intrusion is another concern, where chemicals like VOCs (benzene, trichloroethylene) and SVOCs (naphthalene) enter buildings from contaminated subsurface areas, often in dry cleaners, factories, or gas stations. Exposure can lead to cancer, birth defects, and other health risks.
If radon or vapor intrusion is detected, a sub-slab depressurization system can safely vent these gases away from the structure, reducing indoor concentrations to safe levels. With over 25 years of experience and certifications from AARST and the NRPP, Lifetime Environmental Solutions has installed thousands of these systems, ensuring healthier workplaces.

Commercial SSD Systems
Every commercial building is unique, so sub-slab depressurization (SSD) systems are custom-built to fit each structure’s needs. A typical SSD system includes PVC, an in-line fan, and system monitoring equipment to monitor performance. Larger buildings may require multiple pipes and fans.
Before installation, a Pressure Field Extension (PFE) test determines optimal collection points. During installation, a 4” to 5” hole is cored into the slab, and material is removed to create a collection point. The sealed piping directs gases safely above the roofline to prevent re-entry.
We select the appropriate mitigation fan based on soil type and building size to ensure effective and reliable vapor mitigation.
